Isles lose overtime heartbreaker to Flyers: 4-3

The New York Islanders (5-11-3) jumped off to a 3-0 lead, but fell to the Philadelphia Flyers (12-6-3) in hockey action on Wednesday night.  The good news for Islanders fans is the performance of Kyle Okposo and Michael Grabner, who both had three points.

The bad news was that the Islanders defense could not contain second-star of the game Danny Briere, who tallied the game-tying and winning goals. Donning their new third jerseys the combo of Okposo and Grabner generated the scoring opportunity for New York in the first period of play.

Philadelphia jumped on the board for a 1-0 lead when Andrej Meszros (2) recorded a 62 foot slap shot at 0:16 of the first period of play. Okposo quickly answered with a 20 foot snap shot at the 0:37 mark, with the assist coming from Grabner.

Okposo (2) doubled the Isles lead at the 10:26 mark on some nice passing from Josh Bailey (3) and Grabs (4). The dynamic duo of Kyle and Michael struck again with 18:29 on the scoreboard when Grabs (6) gave New York the 3-1 lead on a 24 foot snap shot.

The Flyers started to chip away at the score at the 5:24 mark of the second period, when Scott Hartnell (9) tallied a power play goal. Danny Briere (7) took over the game in the third and overtime frames, to give Philly two vital points.

New York played a much more physical game, and is starting to look a lot more confident on the ice. Friday night the Islanders will test that confidence against Eastern Conference rivals, the New Jersey Devils.

The game against New Jersey will be a part of a home-and-home series concluding on Saturday. Friday night the Isles/Devils will air on the MSG Plus network, with face-off slated for 3:00 p.m.

Charity Note:  The Islanders will continue Day Two of their holiday food drive on Friday. Any fans bringing three items or more will receive a ticket voucher for a game in December.
